Een lokale magnitudeschaal is van toepassing in een bepaald gebied. De Richter schaal was ontworpen voor Californië, VS. In Nederland is de ondergrond en de diepte van de aardbevingen anders dan in Californië. KNMI heeft voor Nederland drie lokale magnitudeschalen ontworpen:
